International Business’ Senior Lecturer Hamid Guera believes businesses can create positive impact in the world. He lectures to future business leaders and entrepreneurs at LAB University of Applied Sciences.

“Doing business is not just about making profit but also about wellbeing. One of the things we want our students to learn is how to do business in an ethical and responsible way and how to become ethical and responsible business managers and leaders. In that way, they can leave their mark in the world”, Guera says.

International business curriculum consists of basic business studies in the first year. The studies include subjects like marketing, digital business, communication, human resources, mathematics, accounting, entrepreneurship and so on. Later in their studies, the students can choose courses from other degree programs to broaden their knowledge and to create their own path towards the professional future they’re aiming at.

Guera finds that LAB’s international business students will have a competitive advantage on the job market after they graduate.

“Our students are studying in a multicultural environment and have a strong foundation and understanding on different fields of business. They also gain true work life knowledge and connections by doing projects with real companies.”

Many of the LAB international business graduates work as junior or middle management positions or entrepreneurs. If they want to broaden their knowledge later, they can apply to a master’s degree program.

“If you’re curious on how the world works, how business is done ethically and sustainably and you’re eager to learn by doing real life projects and not just by reading books, you should apply to our international business degree”, Guera encourages.

International business student Yahya Kadiri Elmaana

From south to north

International business student Yahya Kadiri Elmaana is finishing his bachelor’s degree at LAB. Elmaana came from Morocco to Finland two years ago and has experienced a lot during his studies.

“I applied because I wanted to see the other part of the world. Finland is a Nordic country, so the climate and the culture is quite the opposite compared to my home country. I’ve been fortunate to learn new things and meet new people, have friends, and form connections”, Elmaana says.

Elmaana studied for a year at moroccan university before applying to LAB. He found that the ways of learning differed from each other.

“The best thing about my studies in here is that they are not as stressful as my first year at university in Morocco. The courses are targeted especially to my field, so I don’t need to learn anything extra which I don’t need. The learning process is also fun and efficient.”

Thank you for the teachers

Elmaana says the best thing about LAB are the teachers who are dedicated and truly care about the students.

“The way teachers help students, tutor them, and follow students’ path throughout their studies is amazing. In addition, they put a lot of effort on their lessons.”

Many Finns know how to speak English, but they may shy away from it. Due to language barrier, Elmaana thinks life is easier for an international student on the campus rather than outside of it.

“Life in LAB is easier inside of LAB than outside because at campus you don’t face the language barrier. Campus is also a place where everyone talks to everyone. And the connections are formed strong here. We help each other through studies.”

What comes to connections, Elmaana emphasizes the importance of networking as an advice for new international students.

“LAB is a very dynamic place. It gives you a lot of opportunities, but you must know how to cease them. Just keep an open mind and eye for those. And I think it’s important to get to know people because those connections might open doors for you later.”
