Finnish language – do you have to master it?

LAB Lahti campus students.
The burning question in many of our international applicants’ minds is: “Do I have to know the Finnish language when living and studying in Finland?”

Worry not. LAB University of Applied Sciences offers multiple degree programmes where the main language of studies is English. As a student at the LAB University of Applied Sciences, you will learn some Finnish during your studies and have the option of taking additional Finnish language courses.

In general, you can get by in Finland without knowing any Finnish, as most Finns speak English to some degree. If a Finn seems hesitant to speak English, it usually has more to do with their courage than their skills.

Knowing Finnish is useful

Nevertheless, knowing the local language is always useful and will make your life easier. For example, dealing with official paperwork, following current news, and applying for a job are easier if you know Finnish.

Meeting new people might also become easier when you can communicate in the local language. Making friends with Finnish students is a fantastic way to learn the Finnish language and practice speaking it. The best way to learn a new language is to put it to use every chance you have.

Finnish people understand that our language is not the easiest to learn. That is why we appreciate effort over perfection. Tervetuloa Suomeen opiskelemaan! Welcome to study in Finland!
