Building a sustainable future together
Together with our partners, we will create new technological solutions, promote the business of circular economy, develop the low-carbon economic structure of regions and promote the well-being of people and the environment.
Through close cooperation with business and industry, we will link the needs of society to our educational content, pilot the most potential new operating methods for further processing and channel our expertise to companies. Through our RDI activities and student involvement, we develop solutions to sustainability challenges and promote sustainable development in cooperation with the higher education community, businesses, the public sector, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
We will use the jointly developed criteria for developing the sustainability and responsibility of RDI. We will develop our operations so that one of the reasons we are a sought-after partner and employer is our sustainable and responsible RDI that is ecologically, socially, culturally and economically sustainable.
Sustainability and responsibility are cross-cutting themes in all the key competences of our RDI activities:
Sustainability work with cities and businesses
Together with our campus cities, Lahti and Lappeenranta, we share the goals of a clean environment and a sustainable future. Through our Climate Action Plan, we take part in advancing the climate work of our campus cities and support the goals of the EU Mission. LAB’s Climate Action Plan is shared with local government and community groups.

In Lahti (European Green Capital 2021), we promote circular economy solutions, accessibility of recreational areas, and nature-based entrepreneurship. We are committed to Lahti’s roadmap, which aims to help the city achieve nature positivity by 2030. Through our actions, we develop nature-positive education as well as research, development and innovation activities based on identified needs. The aim is to support the preservation of nature’s carrying capacity, the sustainable and responsible growth of businesses, and the well-being of people.
In Lappeenranta (European Green Leaf 2021), we have worked with companies to develop methods for managing energy production and consumption as part of the Greenreality network.
To support companies’ efforts towards sustainability, we also offer the competence of our students in the form of exercises, projects and theses. With local innovations that promote sustainability in everyday life and business, we contribute to solving global sustainability challenges. As part of our RDI activities, we organise open seminars on circular economy and responsibility themes.
