Metkulan kylän ja Snellmanin korttelin elävöittämisen esiselvitys
The purpose of the feasibility project is to explore the possibilities for implementing the Metkula Village play town and revitalizing the Snellman Block. According to the vision, the block will become a stage for local activities, offering attractions that will appeal to both locals and tourists, while also enlivening the city's winter season, when many summer tourist and leisure spots are closed. During the summer season, the cozy inner courtyard of the block will serve as a venue for live art and social gatherings. Concerts, local festivals, and other events will revitalize the Lappeenranta city center, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds in an accessible way. The block will offer visitors the opportunity to explore the latest trends in local science and technology in an experiential and interactive manner. Highlighting environmental responsibility and sustainable development will be an integral part of the block's operational concept.
The history of the Snellman block dates back to 1850 when the original society building, now the main building of the block, was constructed. Over the years, the protected buildings have housed various institutions, including the police and fire departments. Layers of history and local stories will be showcased in the children's town built within the indoor spaces. The Metkula Village play town, as it is currently known, is a play town whose architecture and features reflect the historical aspects of Lappeenranta. Metkula Village will be both a meeting point and a functional learning environment for kindergarten and school groups. The future-oriented, community-based upbringing of tomorrow's professionals will take place within the Snellman block, which brings together the stories of the past, present, and future. The cafés, boutiques, and event services provided by local operators will increase the block's appeal as a key tourist attraction in the region.
