In the LAB Separate Application applicants are selected to bachelor's programmes that begin in autumn 2024. You are eligible to apply if you have completed or will complete your upper secondary education outside of Finland by 31 August 2024.

How to apply for LAB Separate Application? 

The application period: 3 – 17 January 2024

Applicants are selected to bachelor's programmes that begin in autumn 2024. After the results are published, the study place must be accepted and possible tuition fee must be paid within 21 days to receive the 20% Early Bird discount.

  • Applicants can apply to one programme in the LAB Separate Application.
  • Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria are set into the order of selection based on pre-defined criteria.
  • In the LAB Separate Application, applicants can supplement their attachments up to 14 days after the end of the application period. Attachments must be uploaded to the application by 31 January 2024 at 3 pm UTC+2.
  • If the degree has been completed in a language other than English, Finnish or Swedish, the documents must be officially translated into either English, Finnish or Swedish.
  • The selection of students is based on the information provided in the application form and attachments. Late or incomplete applications will not be processed during the student selection.
  • The decision on the selection will be notified to the applicants by 15 March 2024 at the latest.

 

Eligibility criteria

All applicants must fulfill the general eligibility requirements for higher education. You are eligible to apply if you have completed (or in spring 2024 will complete) your general or vocational upper secondary education outside of Finland, e.g., a high school diploma. The qualification must give eligibility to higher education studies in the country where the degree has been completed.

LAB Separate Application has five admission groups: 

Group 1
  • Applicants with upper secondary education completed outside of EU/EEA area (general or vocational) e.g., a high school diploma, and language test results.
  • The qualification must give eligibility to higher education studies in the country where the degree has been completed.
  • Applicants are ranked based on their arithmetic average and language test scores. 
Group 2
  • Applicants with upper secondary education completed outside of Finland, (general or vocational) e.g., a high school diploma
  • The qualification must give eligibility to higher education studies in the country where the degree has been completed.
  •  Applicants are ranked based on their arithmetic average and Cambridge International IGCSE examination in accordance with the LAB's threshold conditions. The IGCSE examination as a language certificate does not expire.
Group 3
  • Applicants with upper secondary education completed outside of Finland, but in EU/EEA area (general or vocational) e.g., a high school diploma, and language test results.
  • The qualification must give eligibility to higher education studies in the country where the degree has been completed.
  • Applicants are ranked based on their arithmetic average and language test scores. 
Group 4
  • Applicants with an upper secondary education completed outside of Finland (general or vocational) e.g., a high school diploma, and
  • instead of a language test, an upper secondary or a Bachelor/Master level degree completed in English in EU or EEA country, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or the United States
  • Applicants are ranked based on their arithmetic average scores. 
Group 5
  • Applicants with SAT Test results and an upper secondary education completed outside of Finland (general or vocational) e.g., a high school diploma. The qualification has to give eligibility to higher education studies in the country in question.
  • Minimum requirement for SAT results: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 550.
  • SAT must have been completed after 1 January 2021. Results older than this are not taken into consideration.
  • Applicants are ranked based on their SAT test scores. 

 

Language requirements

 

The language of instruction is English. There are certain language requirements to be met.

Approved language tests and specific requirements

One of the following language test results in English meeting the minimum score mentioned is required to provide your proficiency in English.

All following language tests are accepted by LAB University of Applied Sciences and are valid for two years from the date of taking the test.

When is a language test result not required?

A language test is not required when you have completed an upper secondary degree or a Bachelor/Master level degree in English at an institution located in the following countries: an EU or EEA country, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or the United States.

If the results need to be verified via the test organizer’s webpage, remember to verify the results before applying. If we cannot verify your language test results, the results cannot be used as proof of your English language skills.

 

Selection and evaluation process

Groups 1, 2 and 3

Applicants must meet the minimum arithmetic average requirement and language proficiency result criteria of the program to be eligible.

The evaluation is conducted in two stages.

  • First, the applicant's arithmetic average is evaluated from 0 to 100, and then scored accordingly. Applicants must have a minimum of 70% of the maximum score.
  • In the second phase, the language proficiency results are scored.

Group 4

Applicants must meet the minimum arithmetic average requirement of the program to be eligible. The arithmetic average is evaluated from 0 to 100.

Group 5

Applicants with an upper secondary level of education can apply to Bachelor programs with the SAT Test (Suite of Assessments Test).

When applying with SAT, there are no additional requirements for providing the English proficiency.

Deadline for the test result

Only tests taken after 1 January 2021 are accepted.

SAT results must reach LAB University of Applied Sciences / Admission Services directly from the test organized by 31 January 2024 at 3 p.m. (UTC +2) at the latest.

Applying with an unfinished degree

Applicants applying with an unfinished degree must provide individual certificates for each school year or semester of the degree of upper secondary school up until the application date. The applicant will be assessed based on the grades in these certificates.

A possible admission of an applicant with an unfinished degree is a conditional one.

An admitted student must

  • Graduate by 31 August 2024.
  • Email scans of the original Degree Certificate and Transcript of Records (in addition to the official translations, when required) to LAB Admission Services at admissionsatlab [dot] fi by 6 September 2024 at 3 p.m. (UTC+3).

Applicants who fail to graduate and submit the required documents as requested forfeit their right to study.

 

Note that you can only submit one (1) application form. If you submit several application forms, only the newest one will be taken into consideration and all others (i.e., first submitted ones) will be deleted. Higher education institutions will not inform applicants about deleted applications.
