Study physiotherapy and become an expert in movement, functional ability and rehabilitation

Are you interested in helping people improve their health, mobility, and quality of life? This degree programme provides the qualifications and practical expertise needed to work as a physiotherapist in a wide range of settings.

As a physiotherapist, you will become an expert in movement, functional ability, and rehabilitation. Physiotherapists promote, maintain, and restore health, mobility, and physical functioning for people of all ages whose movement or functional capacity is affected, or at risk, due to ageing, pain, injury, illness, disability, or environmental factors.

Physiotherapy services support individuals, groups, and communities in improving health, well-being, and quality of life. Physiotherapists work collaboratively with clients to enhance participation, prevent functional decline, and promote independent living through evidence-based assessment, guidance, therapy, and rehabilitation.

Where can physiotherapy graduates work?

The degree programme in physiotherapy opens a wide range of career opportunities in health care, rehabilitation, and community settings. Upon graduation, you can work as a physiotherapist in the public, private, or third sector, or establish your own practice as an entrepreneur. The degree qualifies you to work as a physiotherapist throughout the European Union.

As a physiotherapist, you can work in hospitals, primary healthcare centres and rehabilitation facilities. Career opportunities are also available in occupational health services, social and elderly care services, schools, day-care centres, sports and recreational services, as well as non-governmental organisations promoting public health, physical activity, and disability inclusion.

What do the studies include?

As a physiotherapy student, you will learn through authentic client situations where theory and practice are closely connected. You will develop the skills to promote health, movement, functional capacity, and rehabilitation using evidence-based practice and the latest professional knowledge.

During your studies, you will learn to assess and support functional capacity, apply physiotherapy in diverse settings, and develop innovative solutions that improve well-being and rehabilitation outcomes. You will also gain experience in using digital technologies and smart health solutions in collaboration with professionals from different fields.

The degree combines core professional studies with elective studies, allowing you to tailor your learning to your interests and career goals. You can further broaden your expertise through multidisciplinary studies offered across the LAB University of Applied Sciences. The programme emphasises hands-on clinical skills, health technology, and a coaching-oriented approach to physiotherapy practice.

At the modern Lappeenranta campus, learning takes place in biomechanics and exercise physiology laboratories, as well as authentic and simulated environments.

Practical training

The physiotherapy studies include a 40 ECTS clinical placement in a real-world working environment. Through supervised practical training, you will apply your knowledge and skills, learn to manage client situations with confidence, and gain valuable professional experience.

You may not be able to find all your clinical placements in Lappeenranta, which means you may need to move or commute to another city for a few weeks. These costs are not included in the tuition fee, so you will need to cover them yourself.

Structure of studies

  • Common studies 21 ECTS
  • Professional core competence 120 ECTS
  • Clinical placement 40 ECTS
  • Complementary studies 14 ECTS
  • Thesis 15 ECTS
