Malahat Ghoreishi shares her knowledge of sustainable solutions with LAB’s students. She believes knowledge and awareness of climate change will help all students in their careers regardless of the degree programme.
Malahat Ghoreishi studied sustainable solutions in Finland and worked as a Researcher at LUT University when she decided it was time to transfer her knowledge to others. Now she works as a Senior Lecturer and R&D Specialist at LAB University of Applied Sciences, teaching students in the Sustainable Solutions Engineering degree programme.

When Ghoreishi decided to begin her studies, she chose sustainable solutions because she wanted to learn more about sustainability and climate change and find ways to transfer the knowledge to others as well.

“Climate change is happening, and everybody has a role in it. Sustainable solutions are important, and knowledge and awareness are the keys to making a difference. We all form the society, so our everyday decisions matter.”

Teaching at LAB suits Ghoreishi well because it has sustainability and circular economy in its strategy. She also appreciates that LAB’s lecturers and R&D specialists are experts with either research or a company-side background. She believes transferring all that knowledge will help students in their careers.

“Our students can choose, for example, sustainability-related courses regardless of their degree programme. That is a unique opportunity for students to upgrade their knowledge.”

Finnish educational system and working life are to vouch for

For Ghoreishi, Finland seemed like a good place to study because of the world-famous educational system. The decision to study in Finland served both her and her daughter. Ghoreishi feels it is possible to study regardless of age in Finland, compared to many other countries, where the opportunities to study become limited as you age. She thought that the educational system and freedom would be a great opportunity for her daughter as well.

“In Finland, kids are always learning but without the pressure. They learn through games and playing. As for myself, Finland has high-ranking universities that encourage you to come and see how the educational system works. I have been really satisfied with both my and my daughter’s experiences about studying in Finland.”

Finnish working life is less stressful for Ghoreishi. She also feels like the general atmosphere is that everybody can improve their skills and raise their knowledge to answer society’s changing needs. In addition to the Finnish educational system, Ghoreishi had heard valuable things about equality in Finland.

“In Finland, you are considered as a human being first. So regardless of race, where you come from or what your background is, you have equal rights. And as a woman, in Finland, your voice is heard.”

Finnish nature is behind every door

When discussing Finland, nature and seasons always come up. Malahat had also heard a lot about Finnish nature before moving to Finland, and it is among the first things that come to her mind when describing the country.

“Finland has a unique nature, and it is very accessible everywhere you go. You just come out of your house and there it is. As a foreigner living in Finland, I enjoy a lot to experience all the forests and lakes. I also love the summertime in Finland when the sun never goes down. It gives me energy and it is special to witness such beauty that you can’t get perhaps anywhere else in the world.“

“Even LAB’s campus in Lappeenranta is very close to a lake and on the other side is a forest. That creates a unique atmosphere”, describes Ghoreishi the presence of nature in Finland.
