High unemployment is one of the most critical challenges facing the city of Lahti. The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that highly educated people who are unemployed move away, while, at the same time, uneducated and unemployed people move in. The Lahti region fails to retain people with a high level of education because graduates cannot find work: companies and experts do not meet. Active measures are needed to reduce total unemployment and, in particular, to prevent youth unemployment. On the other hand, the situation is aggravated by a growing shortage of labour.

It is important to provide greater support for students and graduates, and help them enter and stay in local employment and local companies. This should be done in regional cooperation and in a business-oriented manner. With the help of a grant from the City of Lahti, LAB University of Applied Sciences and Salpaus Further Education are building a regional cooperation model for educational institutions in order to turn the employment development in a better direction.

The aim of the new regional cooperation model is to acquire new business contacts for LAB University of Applied Sciences, Salpaus Further Education and LUT University, and to support the integration and employment of students and recent graduates in companies based in Lahti.

The regional cooperation model for educational institutions promotes the strategic key projects of the City of Lahti: City of study and science 2021 and the Local government pilots on employment 2021.

Measures:

• Making companies based in Lahti more knowledgeable about educational institutions in the region and their experts

• Working in concrete cooperation with the field of business, acquiring new business contacts and developing the existing ones

• Building a regional cooperation model for educational institutions:

Promoting the employment of students and recent graduates (LAB, Salpaus and LUT) in companies based in Lahti, including career and postgraduate guidance. This should be done in close regional cooperation and in a business-oriented manner

• Enhancing Lahti’s ability to attract and retain residents as a city to study, work and live in

Target groups:

Companies based in Lahti, the public sector and organisations

Students and recent graduates in the Lahti region (LAB, Salpaus and LUT)

Cooperative partners:

City of Lahti

Salpaus Further Education

Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT

The activities are funded by the City of Lahti and LAB University of Applied Sciences.

Concrete cooperation with the field of business will provide new opportunities for traineeships, theses and employment for students and graduates in the area. Through awareness building, companies’ knowledge of local educational institutions and their experts will be increased. This will also enhance Lahti’s ability to attract and retain residents as a city to study, work and live in.

Educated young people and adults who find employment in local companies are the foundation of vitality, growth and competitiveness – the future of Lahti.
