Wood Technology Engineering Education Transforms into a Work‑Life‑Oriented Programme
The mechanical wood processing sector is developing rapidly as a result of digitalisation and automation. At the same time, retirements and the sector’s declining attractiveness are increasing the demand for skilled labour. LAB’s new study model is part of the LAB Wood project, which aims to strengthen the attractiveness and accessibility of wood technology education across Finland.
“It is important to ensure the availability of skilled professionals in the wood industry where there is demand for them. Opportunities to complete a degree must be available nationwide, regardless of place of residence,” says Rami Kivilahti, Competence Manager.
Flexible studies in one’s own region
The new study model enables students to study in their own region and at their own workplace. Students’ prior competences are recognised, and practical training and the bachelor’s thesis are completed in their own work environment. A company mentor appointed by the employer supports learning and connects studies with practical work.
The aim of the model is to facilitate the combination of work and studies, supporting working‑age individuals in career advancement, career change or re‑employment. This is particularly important at a time when an increasing number of higher education students work alongside their studies.
Tailored competence for companies
Companies benefit from the new model in several ways. The content of the education is tailored to employers’ needs, and the programme can be integrated into recruitment processes. This strengthens employer branding and helps attract motivated employees.
“When education is directly linked to one’s own work and enables career development, motivation and the sense of meaningful work increase. At the same time, companies gain access to committed and competent employees quickly and efficiently,” says Markku Mäki‑Hokkonen, Leading Expert at LAB Wood.
