The Green Solvents Pilot Environment, part of the LAB Biofine expertise hub, is an investment project supporting the transition toward a low-carbon and sustainable circular economy. The project will be implemented in South Karelia between 2025 and 2027. Its goal is to develop next-generation biomass separation technologies based on environmentally friendly “green solvents.”

The Green Solvents Pilot Environment enables the piloting of new bio-based products and materials and supports collaboration between companies and research organizations. In particular, technologies based on bio-based deep eutectic solvents (NADES, Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents) offer energy-efficient and low-emission solutions for biomass processing. These technologies improve the recovery of valuable compounds and expand both the range of raw materials and end products.

Project Manager Juha Hildén highlights the project's importance for the renewal of industry:

“The Green Solvents Pilot Environment allows us to combine versatile technologies and develop new methods that support the goals of the circular economy. In particular, the use of green solvents offers opportunities to create sustainable solutions for recycling plastics and biomass. These kinds of investments are essential when we aim to build a resource-wise and competitive industry,” Hildén notes.

Hildén has a strong background in industrial production management, development, and coordination of complex project entities. His core expertise lies in building operational environments and integrating technologies into circular economy applications.

The project strengthens LAB University of Applied Sciences’ role as a pioneer in sustainable bioeconomy and circular economy, while also creating new opportunities for the regional economy and business development.

Mikko Ojapelto, Project Director at LAB Biofine, highlights the project's significance for the South Karelia region:

“Regionally, the investment strengthens cooperation between LAB and LUT supports scalable research and product development infrastructure, and ultimately helps to produce experts in the latest technologies to meet the needs of companies in South Karelia.”
