Mari Vainiomäki, a Business Administration alumna of LAB University of Applied Sciences, has built her career through bold choices, a strong human-centered mindset, and the purposeful use of networks. Today, she works as Head of Client Management at LADEC (Lahden Seudun Kehitys), where her role is to attract companies and investments to the Päijät-Häme region.

“My work is diverse and varied. It largely involves sales, negotiations, and collaboration and above all, understanding and solving the needs of companies.”

Studies laid a strong foundation for her career

Vainiomäki graduated in 2000 with a degree in Business Administration, specializing in marketing and product development, from Lahti Polytechnic. She remembers her studies particularly for their practical approach and the opportunities to apply what she learned immediately in collaboration with companies.

“We gained a strong understanding of the fundamentals of business. It has been directly applicable in working life.”

Her studies also included bold ventures abroad, as Vainiomäki took part in exchange programs in Vietnam and Iceland. The Iceland exchange was made possible through her own initiative, as no ready-made programs existed at the time. She encourages students to go abroad and actively seek the best opportunities for themselves.

“I actively searched for exchange opportunities and built a path that suited me best. Student exchange is one of the most important experiences for me, not only in terms of studies but also personal growth.”

Vainiomäki describes international studies as one of the most significant experiences in developing her skills and personal growth. In addition to expertise, her time abroad helped her build networks that continue to benefit her professional life.

A fast start to her career during studies

Vainiomäki’s career began already during her studies. She worked in the rapidly growing telecommunications sector, where she quickly advanced to demanding roles.

“I worked alongside my studies most of the time, and after graduating I moved straight into a managerial position.”

Her early roles helped her develop a wide range of skills, from customer service and process development to sales management and recruitment. At the same time, she strengthened her understanding of how theory learned in school connects with practical work.

A shift into an expert role

After a long career with the same employer, Vainiomäki began to consider her next step. She wanted to move from a managerial role to a specialist position.

“I wanted to focus on where I can truly create value without managerial responsibility.”

Vainiomäki’s move to the public sector at Lahti Science and Business Park opened a new perspective on regional development and service design. Her work included sales, communications, and developing a new type of operational environment.

Her current role brings growth and collaboration to the region

In her current role at LADEC, Vainiomäki works to attract companies and investments to Päijät-Häme. Her work is based on close collaboration with companies, municipalities, educational institutions, and other stakeholders.

“No two projects are alike. Every solution is tailored to the company’s specific needs.”

A key element of her work is extensive networks and the ability to connect the right people, expertise, and opportunities at the right time. Even long processes that may take years ultimately succeed through collaboration.

Vainiomäki sees interaction between people as the most important factor in working life.

People skills are key to success and career development

Vainiomäki emphasizes that genuine curiosity, listening skills, and a desire to solve the customer’s problem are at the core of everything. Business expertise is important, but without trust there is no collaboration or results. In the end, everything comes down to people.

This same thinking applies to the importance of networks. Vainiomäki describes her network as her personal toolbox: without broad connections to different actors, her work would not be possible. Networks help connect expertise, companies, and opportunities. She encourages people to be bold in reaching out to others. Often, the next opportunity opens when you approach others openly and with genuine intent.

A message to students: dare to be bold

Finally, Vainiomäki encourages students to seize opportunities and build networks already during their studies.

“Courage is one of the most important things. Say yes to opportunities and don’t be afraid to reach out to people.”

She reminds students that working life is not separate from studies; it consists of people, just like the study community. With activity and initiative, you can showcase your skills and open doors to companies.

“Think about what you want to do and where you want to work. Then dare to offer you skills. That will take you far.”
