The Department of Separation Science at LUT University celebrates its 50th anniversary this year — half a century of innovations that advance industry and the green transition. Today, the research focuses on the circular economy and energy‑efficient separation solutions, and collaboration with LAB Biofine brings this expertise directly to companies.

Separation technology plays a central role in the green transition. According to Katja Lahikainen, Director of the LUT Centre for Separation Technology, research at LUT focuses on circular‑economy solutions, energy‑efficient separation processes, and new material streams that support industry’s low‑carbon targets.

“Our expertise covers a wide range of methods from membrane technologies and filtration to complex separation systems applied in, for example, the chemical industry, bio‑based processes, and water treatment.”

Collaboration with LAB Biofine for Companies

Lahikainen notes that LUT’s separation technology experts are closely involved in the LAB Biofine development platform, which supports the development of bio‑based products and processes.

“LUT contributes separation‑technology research expertise to the project, such as recovery of the valuable compounds from biomass, the utilization of side streams, and energy‑efficient separation solutions that enable sustainable bioeconomy business models.”

Collaboration with LAB’s piloting environments promotes the transfer of research results into practice and into corporate innovations.

“Separation technology has been a cornerstone of sustainable industrial development at LUT University throughout its existence — and that is where our focus will remain in the future,” Lahikainen summarizes.

The LAB Biofine team warmly congratulates our partner!
