Building the LAB Biofine ecosystem – expanding and internationalizing the network

The goal has been to identify potential actors and establish connections across various sectors of the bioeconomy.
“We began with a comprehensive market mapping process, drawing on a wide range of channels including websites, events, existing networks, and LAB’s strategic partnerships”, Peri explains.
LAB Biofine has actively participated in both national and international events. In Finland, networking has taken place at events such as FBI Day, Boost Your Business, and Solver X.
Internationally, LAB Biofine has participated in the Pitch Perfect event in Brussels, where connections were made with bioeconomy startups, as well as the PDI Fair - an EU-wide networking event for pilot and demonstration facilities.
“In addition, LAB’s own international activities - such as hosting a delegation from the American forest bioeconomy sector in May and holding collaboration meetings with Odisee UAS—have further enhanced our global visibility”, Peri adds.
Nordic collaboration has focused particularly on Sweden. Through online research, potential partners were identified, leading to a visit to RISE Processum AB and SLU in April 2025. The aim of these meetings was to build models for joint research, development, and innovation activities.
Mapping networks for internationalization with students
In collaboration with AVARA Marketing, LAB Biofine conducted a comprehensive mapping of European bioeconomy companies. The initiative identified 300 companies and 10 industry clusters, providing a strong foundation for expanding international partnerships and developing a robust network.
The development of the ecosystem has also leveraged existing European and national networks.
“LAB Biofine is already part of networks such as the Biorefinery Cluster Europe (BCE), the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), and Clic Innovation”, Peri notes.
To better understand how companies can be effectively engaged in the ecosystem, LAB Biofine has conducted—and continues to conduct—interviews with industry representatives.
“Based on these conversations, our goal is to develop operating models that genuinely address the needs of companies and support long-term collaboration”, Peri explains.
