“I wanted to learn the best of both worlds”

Hello, my name is Nadira Sultana and I’m from Bangladesh. I chose Finland as my studying place for various reasons. Firstly, it’s the happiest country in the world for the sixth time in a row. Secondly, the quality of education, of course. And thirdly, I’m in love with Lahti city!

I was looking for Finnish universities’ study curriculums and LAB’s curricula caught my eye. In addition to study contents, the chance to study in projects motivated me to apply. I believe the best way of learning is by doing and I wanted to learn the best of both worlds: studies and real work life.

Theory vs. practical

Back home in Bangladesh, everything was taught just in theory, but here we get to learn in a practical way, like how everything is really done in business life. From my point of view, it’s highly important that we work with real life companies because it’s essential for our future careers. We can practice and prepare ourselves through our studies and make connections before we graduate.

The other big difference compared to my home country is how hierarchy between students and teachers is almost invisible here in Finland. The teachers are extremely friendly, and I can go up to them any time, even if I face any personal problems.

Future entrepreneur

I’ve completed two semesters here now and my favorite course has definitely been entrepreneurship because there we got to make a real business plan and I would like to move forward with the plan in the future.

LAB has many platforms where you can boost your business plan, for example StartHub and LUTES. Also, I’ve been able to make good connections outside LAB through our annual job fair happening here on campus called DuuniExpo.

I’ve learned basic business studies like mathematics, economics, and financial accounting. It’s crucial to have an understanding on these subjects if you want to make a successful career in business. In addition to these, we can choose subjects of our own choice to extend our knowledge.

After graduation, I hope to start up a business here in Finland because we already have an idea and I’m passionate about it. I think Finland is a great place for those who want to start their own business and our teachers here are always encouraging us to choose our own path, so I want to be an entrepreneur!

I’m in love with Lahti!

Lahti city was one of the main reasons why I choose to study here. The city was selected as EU green capital 2021. And it truly is beautiful, sustainable city and I really enjoy living in here.

Our campus is nearby the city center and campus’ community spirit is great, we really like to spend time together. I mean, I’m on my first year and I have already started tutoring new students!

Overall finding new friends hasn’t been a difficult task because our teachers are encouraging us to make new groups for assignments and projects in classes. I’ve been in multicultural groups and made so many new friends. I also got friends through tutoring and I’m really looking forward for making even more friends in the future.
