Joni Kaarniittu is a fourth year student of Industrial Design programme in the Institute of Design and Fine Arts of the LAB University of Applied Sciences. Kaarniittu’s concept was accepted as one of the nominees for Green Product Award 2024.

Participants from 18 countries applied for the Green Product Award Fashion. After being reviewed under the aspects of design, innovation and sustainability, the best submissions were nominated. Kaarniittu’s “Simpleshoe” is one of the nominees.

The Simpleshoe a sustainable approach to home clothing production.

“Using Econyl, a material derived from recycled ocean plastics, we craft mono-material shoes with an ideal fit, thanks to 3D scanning. Our design masterfully combines flexibility and support through mesh adjustments. What's innovative is our 3D-to-2D design, enabling complete flat 3D printing, minimizing waste, and setting the stage for a future where fashion is created on demand, reducing storage needs, and promoting eco-friendly practices,” Kaarniittu describes.

The online public vote is open until January 14, 2024. Read more and vote here
