Reusable Easy to Breath and Use Masks

EU4Health project, Easy2reUse develops a next-generation, reusable face mask for healthcare professionals, critical workers, and citizens with 11 partners from 6 countries. The project’s expected impact is broad and significant:

1. Enhanced Crisis Preparedness and Supply Security

The project strengthens Europe’s ability to respond to pandemics and health emergencies by providing a reusable, easy-to-clean mask that can be manufactured and stockpiled within Europe.

Reduces dependency on single-use masks and non-EU supply chains, improving European supply chain resilience.

2. Sustainability and Environmental Benefits

The long lifespan and reusability of the mask and its filters significantly reduce waste compared to disposable masks.

Life cycle assessments and environmental impact analyses guide the development toward the most sustainable solution.

3. User Experience and Occupational Well-being

The mask is designed for long-term use: it is easy to breathe through, comfortable for extended wear, and fits a wide range of face shapes (universal fit).

User experiences are studied in Finland and Spain, and feedback is used to further improve comfort, safety, and cleanability. Improved comfort and protection are expected to reduce absenteeism and improve well-being among healthcare workers.

4. Economic and Societal Impact

The mask’s total lifetime cost is low, as it withstands repeated cleaning and use, making it more economical than single-use alternatives. The project includes a preparedness plan for rapid deployment and distribution of masks during pandemics across EU countries.

Supports European industry competitiveness and innovation in the PPE sector.

5. Wider Societal Benefits

The reusable mask benefits not only healthcare but also other critical sectors (e.g., police, rescue services, home care).

The transparent facepiece improves patient safety and communication, especially with children, people with memory disorders, and other vulnerable groups.

6. Knowledge Sharing and Long-term Impact

Project results and models are widely shared and can be adapted in other EU countries.

Training and communication are central to ensure widespread adoption and correct use and maintenance of the mask.

In summary:

Easy2reUse delivers substantial impact by improving pandemic preparedness, reducing environmental burden, supporting occupational well-being, and strengthening European expertise and supply security. The reusable, intelligent mask is a concrete step toward a more sustainable and resilient future.
