Biogenic Carbon Capture and Utilization

LAB University of Applied Sciences is a partner in the international Bio-CCU (Biogenic Carbon Capture and Utilization) project, funded by the Interreg Central Baltic Programme 2021-2027. Running from July 2026 to June 2029, the project brings together partners from Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Latvia to develop practical solutions for replacing fossil-based carbon dioxide with locally available biogenic CO2. Industries across the Central Baltic region depend on imported, fossil-based CO2, even though large amounts of biogenic CO2 are already being produced locally and released into air as emissions.

During the project, the partners will work together to strengthen the use of biogenic CO2 across the Central Baltic region by mapping biogenic CO2 sources and identifying potential areas for its utilisation. Based on this information, the project will develop a shared database of existing and potential bio-CO2 value chain solutions, providing stakeholders with valuable knowledge and practical examples. The partners will also create an online decision-support tool to help organisations evaluate and design viable bio-CO2 value chains tailored to their needs. At the same time, the project tests it for real by capturing, purifying and bottling biogenic CO2 at a biogas plant in Sweden, and using it to grow microalgae at a wastewater treatment plant in Estonia.

LAB's role in Bio-CCU is to map regional sources and potential uses of biogenic CO2, providing background information for the shared database of existing and potential bio-CO2 value chain solutions. LAB will also contribute to the environmental assessment of selected bio-CO2 value chains by conducting Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) for selected value chains. These analyses will support comparisons between fossil-based and biogenic CO2 solutions and help identify the most sustainable pathways for carbon utilization in the Central Baltic region.
