Salpakierto: Kujala waste management center
Lahti is a pioneer in circular economy. At the moment, we recycle more than 99% of household waste: one third is used to make recycled materials, and the other two thirds are used to produce energy.
Environmental goals and business meet in the ecosystem of the Kujala waste management centre, which is a unique example of circular economy.
Salpakierto Ltd is owned by 10 municipalities, and it is tasked with performing municipal waste management services in the region of the shareholder municipalities. These tasks include the reception, processing, recycling and utilisation of waste, as well as the development of waste management and the provision of the information related to it. The region where it operates has about 200,000 residents and some 13,000 companies.
Almost any forest can be a health forest, but Lahti has a special area named Lahti Health Forest. It is located in the Salpausselkä woodland park near Päijät Häme Central Hospital, about six kilometers from the city center. The Lahti Health Forest consists of a 3,4 km woodland route and the conjoining accessible Likolampi nature trail.
On this tour we will explore the accessible Likolampi nature trail with a local guide.
Please note to wear suitable shoes and clothing for the forest walking. Be aware that the tour may need to be canceled in case of bad weather.
Hartwall is one of Finland's largest beverage manufacturers.
Hartwall brewery is paying high attention to sustainability. The factory in Lahti operates for instance completely without fossil fuels. This is made possible by a biogas plant, where the mash left over from brewing beer is used to make energy. Hartwall utilizes the surplus part of the energy production by fertilizing the local barley field.
During the hour-long tour at Hartwall Visitor Center, we will introduce you to our activities, products and, for example, our high-quality, locally-sourced ingredients. In addition, the tour dives into Hartwall's history of more than 180 years. After the tour there is a possibility to shop at Hartwall's brewery store.
